Questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily. Higher is easier. Below 50 is hard going for a general audience, though fine for specialists.

What grade level should I aim for?

Around 8th or 9th grade for a general audience. Shorter sentences and shorter words bring it down fastest.

Which part of the page do you score?

The main text: the <article> or <main> element when there is one, otherwise the body without menus, headers, footers, sidebars, forms and code. Headings count toward structure, not the score.

Does it work for other languages?

The formulas are built for English syllables and sentence length. For other languages we still show the numbers, but flag them as a rough guide.
