What it checks

  • Broken links

404s, server errors, dead domains and links that never answer.

  • Redirecting links

Links that bounce through a redirect, with the URL to link to instead.

  • Links to other sites

A spot check of outbound links, a few per site.

  • Plain HTTP links

Links to insecure http:// pages from a secure page.

  • Links without text

Image or icon links that screen readers and crawlers can’t describe.

  • Blocked checks

Sites that refuse automated checks are flagged, not called broken.

Questions

Why do broken links matter?

Visitors hit a dead end and leave, and crawlers waste their visit on pages that don’t exist. A few broken links won’t sink your rankings, but they make a site feel neglected.

Does it check every link on the page?

It checks up to about 30 unique links per run: links on your site first, then a few on each of the other sites you link to. The result says exactly how many were checked out of how many found.

Why is a link marked “couldn’t check”?

Some sites, like LinkedIn and many shops, block automated requests with a 401, 403 or 429. That doesn’t mean the link is broken. Open it in your browser to be sure.

Should I fix links that redirect?

For links on your own site, yes. Each redirect adds a round trip before the page loads. Point the link straight at the final URL. Redirects on other sites are usually fine.
